Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa (Belluno, 1940 – Rome, 2010) has been Minister of Economy and Finance in the Italian Government from May 2006 to May 2008 and Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee of the IMF until May 2008.

From 2009 he has been President of Notre Europe (Paris), the European think-tank founded by Jacques Delors and Chairman Europe of Promontory Financial Group, LLC.

Previously, he was a Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank from 1998 to May 2005 and Chairman of the IASC Foundation (International Accounting Standard Committee) in 2005-2006. His earlier appointments include: Chairman of CONSOB, the Italian Financial Services Authority (1997-1998), Deputy Director-General of the Banca d’Italia (1984-1997), and Director-General for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Commission of the European Communities (1979-1983).

He has also been Joint Secretary to the Delors Committee for the study of European Economic and Monetary Union (1988-1989); Chairman of the Banking Advisory Committee of the Commission of the European Communities (1988-1991); Chairman of the Working Group on Payment Systems of the Central Banks of the European Community (European Monetary Institute) (1991-1995); Chairman of the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision (1993-1997); Chairman of the European Regional Committee of IOSCO (International Organization of the Securities Commissions, 1997-1998); Chairman of the FESCO (Forum of the European Securities Commissions) (1997-1998); Chairman of the G10 Committee on Payments and Settlement Systems (2000-2005).
He has been a Member of the Group of Thirty since 1979 and he still is a Member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for International Economics (IIE).

He has been President of the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies (Geneva), and Senior Fellow of IAI (Institute for International Affairs, Rome).

He graduated from the Luigi Bocconi University, Milan, Italy, in 1966 and received a Master of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1970). He served as Artillery Officer. He holds six honorary degrees.

He has been the author of more than 100 publications, many of them in English and in French. Recent books include ‘The short view’ (2009), ‘Italy, a timid ambition’ (2007), ‘Europe, an active patience’ (2006), ‘The Euro and its Central Bank’ (2004), ‘Regulating Finance’ (2004), ‘Europe, a Civil Power’ (2004), ‘Twelfth of September. The world is not at square one’ (2002).
He was Cavaliere di Gran Croce of the Italian Republic.
